At the outset of the Balance Project, September 2000, the objectives
and deliverables of the Project were very clear, they are discribed
below:
Objectives
This project will gather, disseminate and embed existing good practice
in developing methodologies to generate an engineering community
to which more balanced numbers of women and men are attracted, recruited
and retained.
- Identify and document successful existing strategies and examples
of good practice.
- Document and produce resource guides on existing good practice
in the form of case study templates.
- Raising awareness and stimulating recruitment into engineering
by working in partnership with schools, colleges and local community
outreach centres.
- Establishing a tiered mentoring support network to ensure high
retention rates.
- Working with employers on joint schemes in which female students
are placed into posts in the manufacturing engineering industry
whilst participating in their degree programme.
- Encourage new institutions to adapt and embed the identified
examples of good practice.
- Monitor and evaluate the experience.
- Develop models of good practice to be disseminated throughout
UK HE.
- Embed this inclusive approach into Manufacturing Engineering
departments throughout the UK
