At the outset of the Balance Project, September 2000, the objectives and deliverables of the Project were very clear, they are discribed below:

Objectives

This project will gather, disseminate and embed existing good practice in developing methodologies to generate an engineering community to which more balanced numbers of women and men are attracted, recruited and retained.

  • Identify and document successful existing strategies and examples of good practice.
  • Document and produce resource guides on existing good practice in the form of case study templates.
  • Raising awareness and stimulating recruitment into engineering by working in partnership with schools, colleges and local community outreach centres.
  • Establishing a tiered mentoring support network to ensure high retention rates.
  • Working with employers on joint schemes in which female students are placed into posts in the manufacturing engineering industry whilst participating in their degree programme.

  • Monitor and evaluate the experience.
  • Develop models of good practice to be disseminated throughout UK HE.
